The Structure

Liberty is a broad based wealth management group specialising in life insurance, asset management, retirement and investment planning, property management and development, health schemes and administration. Liberty is majority owned by Standard Bank Group (operating as CfC Stanbic Bank in Kenya), the largest financial services group in Africa which in turn is 20% owned by the largest bank in the world, ICBC of China.

Liberty has a footprint that covers 15 countries in Africa under the Liberty and STANLIB brands predominantly.

Liberty was founded in 1957 by Sir Donald Gordon who saw his father work hard all his life but reap little financial reward. This ignited in him the unstoppable belief that everyone should have the opportunity to grow their wealth and leave a proud legacy for their family. This belief is captured in our very name, Liberty, which represents freedom and opportunity.

Nearly 60 years later, with the same belief still driving us, we have grown into an organisation with assets under management of US$ 35 billion, more than 2,5 million clients and properties that cover 1,1 million square kilometers. With a presence in 15 African countries, we have grown from being a South African life insurer to a Pan-African financial services company, offering asset management, investment, insurance and health products.

Liberty Kenya Holdings (LKHL) is the listed company that owns Liberty Life Kenya and Heritage Insurance. Liberty is the principal investor in Liberty Kenya and a group associate of STANLIB as illustrated below.
